Breast Lift vs. Implants

Throughout your life, a lot can happen to your breasts. Factors such as breastfeeding, pregnancy, and gravity can all affect your breasts’ appearance. Whether you want to correct a new issue or a lifelong issue, breast surgery is a great option.

Two ways to address your breast goals are a lift or implants. Deciding between a breast lift or implants can be challenging, but we are here to help you make the best choice. You may even find that you want to get both procedures done at the same time.

In Johnson City, the office of Dr. Jim Brantner uses cutting-edge medical procedures to get you to look and feel your best. Contact us today for information about lifts and implants.

Breast Lift vs. Implants – The Difference

The purpose of breast implants is to increase the volume of your breasts using saline or silicone. You may be a good candidate for implants if you want to:

  • Improve your breast shape
  • Go up in bra size
  • Fix asymmetry between your breasts

Implants come in different shapes and sizes to match your needs. Each type of implant has pros and cons.

A breast lift, on the other hand, reduces bust sagginess. If you want to combat drooping due to aging or breastfeeding, a lift could be your best option. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, will help you get firmness back to your chest.

How Do You Choose?

Several factors are involved in altering your breasts. To help you pick between a breast lift and implants, consider these factors:

  • Breast volume. Your breast volume is the fullness of your breasts. If you think your chest looks too flat or even deflated, implants can give you that volume back.
  • Position of nipples. When you look at yourself, do your nipples point toward the ground? Sagging tissue makes your nipple area stretch or move around. A breast lift will put your areolas into a better position.
  • You may want a bigger breast size for plenty of reasons. If you want to estimate how you would look post-procedure, try on different implants with Dr. Brantner’s assistance.

For a comprehensive change, think about getting both procedures. Combined, a breast lift and implants save you recovery time and money. You can also opt to get a breast lift after you’ve healed from implants.

Preparing for Your Procedure

For a breast lift, we will make a small incision that varies in shape depending on your procedure’s depth. The incisions tell you the new location of your nipple and where we may get rid of extra skin. Then, we stitch the areola into place for each breast.

For implants, we create a pocket under the tissue of the breast. We insert the implant through this cut and mold it into the correct shape. After repositioning the nipple, we use sutures to close the incisions.

Both procedures typically use general anesthesia to reduce discomfort. As with most surgery, you will want to prepare by not eating or drinking within eight hours of the procedure. We will instruct you on whether you need to pause your medications before surgery.

Recovery

You are usually free to go home directly after surgery. However, you may need to spend the night on some occasions. When you get home, follow Dr. Brantner’s instructions for resuming daily activities.

Your breasts will feel tender, but you should notice the results right away. After we remove the bandages in a couple of days, you will get an elastic bra to keep your breasts in place during the healing process.

You should be able to go back to work within four to five days. However, it’s best to avoid strenuous activities for at least three weeks.

Dr. Brantner will schedule follow-up visits to keep an eye on your recovery. If you have any concerns, we will take care of them promptly.
