What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from specific areas of the body in order to improve the size, appearance, shape, contour and/or feel of the area.

Common Areas for Treatment Include:

  • Thighs
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Calves and ankles

Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells and tissue in a specific area targeted for treatment. This procedure can reshape and resize areas of the body that have become prone to depositing excess fat.

Benefits of Liposuction

There are plenty of benefits to having liposuction. Some benefits include:

  • Safe and minimally invasive removal of fat
  • Reduction or elimination of cellulite
  • Improved health associated with fat loss
  • Boost in self-esteem
  • Improved proportioning and sculpting

What To Expect From Your Procedure?

How to prepare?

Before your procedure, your surgeon will want to discuss what you can expect from the surgery. They will review your medical history, medications, and supplements you may be taking. Your surgeon may recommend you stop taking certain medications prior to surgery. It may also be necessary to have lab tests done before you move forward.

Before your procedure

Your surgeon may mark circles and lines on your body before your procedure. This helps them stay on target during the operation. They may also take before and after images of the area being treated. Depending on the type of liposuction you are having, local or regional anesthesia will be given. Other procedures, or those that are more intensive, may require general anesthesia. Your doctor will discuss all of your options with you and make sure you’re comfortable with everything before moving forward.

During your procedure

A team of professionals will monitor your vitals in order to keep you comfortable. The procedure can last up to several hours, depending on the amount of fat removal necessary. When fully sedated your surgeon will make small cuts into your marked skin. This is done so they can insert a thin tube called a cannula. Next, they will slide the cannula under your skin in order to begin removing the fat. The cannula is connected to a vacuum that suctions fat and fluid from your body, but don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing.

After your procedure

Post-procedure you will need to spend whatever amount of time the doctor feels you need to recover and stabilize. Some procedures are outpatient, while others may require an overnight stay. It all depends on what the type of procedure you’re having done, and on other aspects like your medical history and age.

You should expect some swelling, discomfort, and bruising after the procedure. This is normal. Your surgeon may also put you on an antibiotic to limit the risk of infection, and prescribe medication to help you manage any pain.

What To Expect Post Procedure?

It may take a few days before you’re able or comfortable with returning to work. It may take weeks before resuming normal activities. Your recovery time depends on how drastic your procedure was. Some contour irregularities may occur while the remaining fat settles into position. If you have good skin tone, the skin will mold itself to the new contours that were created.

Any associated swelling should gradually subside over the course of a few weeks if not sooner. Within months you can expect the treated area to have a smoother appearance. Liposuction results are generally long-lasting. As long as you maintain your weight after the procedure you will notice a huge difference. If you gain weight after the procedure your fat pockets may redevelop.
