Breast Lift Procedure

When it comes to breast enhancement options, breast augmentation and breast reduction often come to mind first. However, one less-noted option is breast lift procedures.

A breast lift can be the perfect choice for elevating sagging or drooping breasts and can even lessen the appearance of breast asymmetry. Many of our patients report that a breast lift helped them feel better about their bodies and gain confidence.

At Jim Brantner M.D., you can trust that you will be getting your breast lift performed by an expert. Dr. Brantner and his team have years of experience and the friendly demeanors needed to make your experience comfortable.

What Is a Breast Lift Procedure?

Over time, many people’s breasts become more saggy and less elastic. This is, of course, a natural effect of gravity. For those who have been pregnant, breastfed, or experienced variations in body size, the change over time can be even more significant. Breast lifts are designed to alter the position of the breasts. Many women choose to get breast lifts to give their breasts a perkier and tighter appearance.

A breast lift procedure can be performed in different ways based on your breasts’ size and shape, as well as your aesthetic goals. This can include raising the breasts, reducing the size of the areolae, and changing the location of the areolae and nipples.

In patients whose breast lift will only require a smaller amount of tightening, the doctor will make an incision around the areola. For patients that require more tightening and reshaping, the surgeon will make an incision around the areola and a vertical cut from the center of the areola down to the crease of the breast. Another option is horizontal cuts across the breast creases.

How Are Breast Lifts Different from Breast Implants or Breast Augmentation?

Breast lifts are a different procedure from breast implants or breast augmentation, although in some circumstances, individuals choose to combine the procedures.

The breast augmentation process focuses on making changes to the size and shape of the breast—especially the size. In many cases, breast implants are used to make the breasts bigger. Breast implants are small prostheses that are most often made of saline or silicone. In comparison, breast lift procedures focus on the breast’s position and can sometimes include more minor changes to shape.

What Are the Steps of the Breast Lift Procedure Process?

Consultation

At Jim Brantner M.D. Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we always start with a detailed consultation appointment. We use this appointment to go over your health history, find out your aesthetic goals, and set reasonable expectations. The doctor will do a physical exam of your breasts to see the location of your nipples and areolae and to assess your skin tone to inform this process.

Pre-Operative

We typically recommend making a few small lifestyle changes in the period immediately before the surgery. It is important to stop taking certain medications, such as aspirin and anti-inflammatories, and to stop smoking cigarettes. These things make the surgery and the subsequent recovery period easier on your body.

Procedure

The procedure typically takes two to three hours. Breast lifts are an outpatient procedure and can be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the situation.

Post-Operative

After the procedure, most people experience bruising and swelling in their breasts for about two weeks. There can also be pain around the incisions and sensations of numbness by the nipples or areolae.

Many of the details of post-operative care vary based on the specifics of a patient’s surgery. For example, some people have drainage tubes inserted near their breasts to drain extra fluid, which are then removed after a few days. If a patient requires stitches, some surgeons will use self-dissolving stitches, while others may schedule removal of the stitches at a doctor’s appointment 7 to 14 days after the surgery.

To minimize pain in the few days after the surgery, we recommend that you do not engage in daily activities or exercises that require heavy lifting or significant bending.

Financing

We have several cosmetic surgery financing options. We accept many insurance plans, although not all procedures can be covered by insurance. For payment, we can take cash, checks, or some credit cards.

There are many women who wish that their breasts were firmer, higher or even a different shape altogether. For all these women, the solution is quite simple. A breast lift. A breast lift surgery can significantly alter the appearance of your breasts to be more firm and help them hold a good shape.

A breast lift surgery or mastopexy in medical terms, can really change the way your breasts look. The nipples are repositioned, the breasts are raised and even the size of areolas can be altered. More volume can also be added during the breast lift procedure by adding breast implants.

What is a Breast Lift or Mastopexy?

Mastopexy, also referred to as breast lift operation is the procedure in which surgical augmentation takes place over or under the breast walls. Removing excess skin helps with loosening skin tissue from and giving a more youthful breast contour. It is possible for people looking for areola surgery to have it performed on a droopy breast to get a smaller areola. The trip usually lasts three hours under general anesthesia. Various people even have breast implants during breast lifts. The plastic surgeon will advise you on the possibilities that you can choose from.

Why is it done?

A breast lift can reduce sagging and raise the position of the nipples and the darker area surrounding the nipples (areolae). The size of the areolae can also be reduced during the procedure to keep them in proportion. Some women with breast lifts may not produce milk. A heavier breast gives you fewer chances of tumbling. When you are pregnant the breasts may grow longer or reduce results from lifting. Breastfeeding should also be considered as nipples remain independent of breast tissue. When planning to be pregnant again it’s possible you might delay getting some lifts or taking one.

Types of Breast Lifts

Cosmetic surgical procedures include various incision methods which may be suitable for any breast lift procedures such as the removal of excess follicles and breast tissue and the specific technique employed. Plastic surgeons usually advise on the types of breast lift to achieve maximum results with minimal visible scarring.

  • The lollipop lift
  • The anchor lift
  • The donut lift
  • The crescent lift

What Happens During a Mastopexy Procedure?

You can get your breast lifting done in hospital rooms or outpatient surgical rooms. During your surgery, you will be met by a hospital anesthesiologist. Then you will be taken to the clinic for anaesthesia and treatment with general anesthetic medications. The doctor removes some skin and moves the breast tissue to a suitable spot. If an implant is required it needs to be taken in and wrapped into a breast to prevent it coming back. The procedure itself is not that dangerous but one can never be too careful.

How Do You Prepare Yourself?

Upon visiting your plastic surgeon you might consider reviewing your medical history. Tell your doctor if you’ve received breast treatment for any reason. They might require an update on a mammography or breast biopsy. Ask about any of your medicines that were used recently or surgeries. Take note of your breasts to improve their appearance and position them properly before lifting them. In some cases, doctors will take a snapshot of the breasts with them on file to prove what it has been in its original state.

Life After Breast Lift Surgery

In women undergoing breast surgery, there are many recurrent symptoms. Your own doctor can also give you the necessary injections with the permission of your cosmetic doctor to ease your symptoms. You must also limit any physical activity that could prevent thigh and hip injuries during breast lifting. It’s likely most underwire bra wearers will be wearing these bare for eight weeks. Your surgeon is capable of advising you how well the recovery time before surgery may be possible.

What to Expect During Mastopexy Recovery?

In the period of healing, it can feel very painful. For some days the painkiller is prescribed during this time period. After two to three days, your cosmetic surgeon is going to pull all those stitches apart. It is expected that women’s breast size will increase with time as age progresses. A few little variations can be noticed regarding symmetry between one breast and another. Eventually, slight alterations may need fixing. For breast surgical operations a permanent lack of feel and movement has never occurred with any complications.

Combining a Breast Lift with Augmentation

Some times when the desired effects are not achieved, breast augmentation is used as well. This is quite a common occurrence and many women prefer that they have more volume then before. A breast lift when paired up with  breast augmentation can be the perfect combination of cosmetic surgery.. With a better shape, breast size and volume is also improved. This makes it a very popular combination in the world of plastic surgery.

Dr. Jim Brantner M.D. has helped many women in Johnson City to get the firm and full breasts that they desire. Being a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Brantner knows how to take good care of his patients and give them the results that they want.

mother and daughter playingBreast augmentations may get all the press, but breast lift surgery is the preferred breast enhancement option for many women. Unlike with a breast augmentation, a breast lift (or mastopexy) does not enlarge the breasts, but lifts and reshapes existing breast tissue to create a firmer, more youthful silhouette.

Is a Breast Lift Right for You?

Ask yourself these questions before scheduling a breast lift consultation with a plastic surgeon:

  • Are my breasts sagging due to age, breastfeeding, weight loss, or heredity?
  • Am I unhappy with the loss of elasticity in my breasts?
  • Am I happy with the natural size of my breasts, or would I like breast implants or a breast reduction as well as a lift?

Once you decide to get fuller, more lifted breasts, call Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. You’ll meet with Dr. Brantner to make sure you’re a good candidate for a breast lift. Then a staff member will work with you to figure out payment and scheduling.

Preparing for Breast Lift Surgery

  • Follow your physician’s instructions. You may think it’s silly to stop taking certain vitamins or skip meals before surgery, but every instruction Dr. Brantner gives is for your health, safety, and a better outcome of your procedure.
  • Stay healthy. Getting sick may cause your medical team to postpone surgery for your safety.
  • Stock up. You’ll need fragrance-free soap and shampoo, as well as your favorite “under the weather” foods.
  • Ask for help. You’ll need someone to drive you home, pick up your prescriptions, and help take care of you after your surgery.
  • Plan for vacation. Pretend you’ll be out of town for the next several days. Arrange for child care, pet sitters, and a clean and maintained house before you leave for the surgery center.
  • The morning of your surgery, wear only comfortable clothes (yes, that means skipping deodorant and hairspray). Leave the glasses, jewelry, makeup, and nail polish at home.

As women age, their breasts begin to lose their shape. Breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and loss of elasticity in the skin may cause the breasts to sag or elongate, causing self-consciousness or physical discomfort. A mastopexy, or breast lift, is a surgical procedure that elevates the breasts, removing excess skin to firm and rejuvenate the figure. Patients who have breast lift surgery regain the perky, youthful figures that age or life has changed.

Reasons for Choosing Breast Lift Surgery

woman breastfeedingChoosing cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal decision. Undergoing cosmetic procedures should always be about boosting your own self-confidence, not about succumbing to pressure or fitting another person’s ideal. You may be a good candidate for breast lift surgery if:

  • You are happy with the size of your breasts
  • You are unhappy that your breasts have begun to sag or lose their shape
  • Your breasts droop unevenly
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall beneath the crease of your breasts
  • The skin of your breasts is stretched or sagging
  • You are physically healthy

Breast Lift Consultation

Breast lift surgery uplifts and reshapes the breasts, restoring a more youthful appearance. During a breast lift consultation, Dr. Brantner and his patient discuss the surgical procedure and recovery, the desired aesthetic, and current health concerns that may affect the procedure. Some women may choose to have only a breast lift, while women who are unhappy with their breast size may choose to have breast implants or a breast reduction as well. Breast lift surgery firms and shapes the breasts, but it does not affect the size or fullness of the breasts. You should feel comfortable discussing any breast lift questions, preoperative stresses, or clarification of your desired results with Dr. Brantner during your consultation.
