What is a Breast Reduction Procedure?

Breast reductions, otherwise known as Reduction Mammoplasties, can be a relief for thousands of men and women. If your breasts are causing pain or other health issues, then you may wish to consider a breast reduction.

In a breast reduction, our surgeon improves a patient’s health by removing a predetermined amount of breast tissue, skin, and fat. This reduces the patient’s breast size overall and helps improve their neck, shoulder, back, and overall health.

If you wish to know what the procedure evolves in more detail, please read the next paragraph. If you find you feel squeamish, feel free to scroll to the next section.

To remove the excess breast tissue, your surgeon will make an incision around your nipple and then downward over your breast — think of a keyhole. Our expert team will remove excess skin, tissue, and fat before adjusting your nipple for cosmetic purposes. Your surgeon may need to use drainage tubes before your incision site is sutured. Our team will then wrap your breasts in a special gauze; your doctor may recommend a surgical bra, as well.

Reasons for Seeking a Reduction Mammaplasty

Disproportionately large breasts can lead to health issues such as neck pain, back pain, breathing troubles, and more. Because of this, more than 90,000 breast reductions are performed per year. The procedure can also be used for men who suffer from conditions like gynecomastia.

Some patients also seek a reduction for cosmetic reasons. Reduction mammoplasties help lift and firm your breasts and improve their contour and symmetry. Clothing will also look and feel better.

What to Expect when Seeking a Breast Reduction?

As with any large medical decision, a breast reduction takes place through multiple stages, from the pre-op to the post-op and recovery. Each step is critical to the process.

To help you prepare, we’ve broken it down into five main categories:

The Consultation

You’ll meet with one of our highly experienced doctors to discuss your medical history and your reasons for seeking the reduction. Detailed honesty is crucial for our team. We understand discussing health concerns can be emotionally draining; our staff takes the utmost care to support you during this time and remain professional.

Some things the doctor may discuss with you:

  • How have you felt living with oversized breasts?
  • How do they affect your daily life?
  • What pain or other symptoms are you experiencing?
  • What prompted you to seek a reduction?

Your doctor may request imaging and measurements. During this time, they’ll discuss the amount of breast tissue to be removed. You will also receive more detailed instructions regarding the preparation and recovery, and you can ask any questions or state any concerns you may have.

The Preparation

The main task is to ensure you are healthy to ensure proper healing post-op. During your consultation, your doctor may have specific instructions for you. On top of these, you should eat well-balanced meals — no diets. You should also stay hydrated. The surgeon may recommend you take certain vitamins or cease certain medications such as Motrin or Aleve; be prepared to take notes during your consultation.

Before you come in for your procedure, you’ll want to stock your home with recovery supplies, including:

  • Books, magazines, movies, or other quite forms of relaxation
  • Clean, loose, comfortable shirts and blouses
  • Gauze and clean washcloths and towels
  • Soft or surgical bras
  • Specialized ointments or creams as recommended by your surgeon

Be sure to keep your phone within reaching distance.

The Procedure

Breast Reductions are a routine procedure, often performed at outpatient facilities. The procedure takes approximately three to five hours. You will be under anesthesia, so be sure you have a friend or family member who can bring you, wait in the lobby, and then drive you home.

The Recovery

Average recovery time is one week, though some patients may need two. You will be scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon; over the course of your recovery, bandages and sutures will be removed.

Physically active patients should know that normal activity should not resume for a month.

Potential Side Effects

A sense of fatigue and soreness are completely normal during recovery. Our team will initially prescribe antibiotic ointment and painkillers to help ease you.

While scars are a normal side effect, certain precautions can help reduce them — such as avoiding heavy lifting.

While rare, some patients do experience complications in their recovery. Most noted is inadequate healing around the nipple area, which may call for a skin graft.

If you are planning to have children, know that breast reduction surgeries can make breastfeeding more difficult.

All patients should be aware of the emotional impact of surgery. Be open with your surgeon; they are there to support you and care for you during this time.

Look and Feel Better with a Breast Reduction

While quite a bit of effort is involved in a Breast Reduction, very few women regret having had the operation. Your back, neck, and health will thank you, and you can return to your everyday life with a new sense of comfort and wellness.
