Keep Skin Smooth When the Air Gets Dry

Keep Skin Smooth When the Air Gets Dry

The combination of winter’s chill and the all-encompassing warmth indoors leaves skin dry, cracked, and inflamed. If you’ve recently had a facelift, necklift, or facial rejuvenation procedure, your skin is more tender than usual – and thus more susceptible to the harshness of winter weather. Keep skin smooth and healthy for this year’s holiday pictures by paying special care to skin care during the winter months.

Post Procedure Skin Care

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures allow patients to get noticeably healthier skin without the cost or recuperation of a facelift. Whether you have a full facelift, Juvederm, or a chemical peel on your wishlist this year, proper skin care is critical to achieving that youthful glow.

  • Wash your skin (and the area around sutures) as recommended by your doctor
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free facial cleansers and moisturizers
  • Avoid wearing makeup until allowed by your doctor

Tips for Healthier Skin

moisturizerWhether or not you’re planning a cosmetic procedure, a good skin care routine is vital during the winter months. Properly caring for your skin preserves the strength and elasticity of your skin, helping you keep your natural youthfulness.

  • Use an oil-based moisturizer, which will create a protective layer between your skin and the elements
  • Wash your face daily
  • Moisturize every morning and night
  • Use foundation with built-in sunscreen
  • When the air becomes dry, use a humidifier
  • Eat healthy foods and exercise 3 times a week

Rejuvenate the Skin with Juvederm

Rejuvenate the Skin with Juvederm

The holidays have a way of shedding light on the aspects of our lives we’d like to change. For many of us that means rethinking our priorities, finding more time for the people we love, and attempting to come to terms with what we dislike about our physical appearance. If you’re lacking self-confidence this holiday season, there’s no need to put on a brave face. Juvederm is a non-surgical procedure that subtly smooths and lifts sagging skin, giving you a youthful glow (and a brighter smile) just in time for holiday photos.

What is Juvederm?

Juvaderm is an injectable filler that adds volume to the skin, temporarily minimizing the effects of age. The gel is injected around the mouth to treat moderate to servere lines around the nose, chin, and cheeks. Juvederm is approved for use in patients over 21 years of age. The anti-aging effects generally last around one year.

Candidates for Juvederm Injections

doctor injecting a fillerIf you’re dissatisfied with wrinkles and sagging in the skin around your mouth, but aren’t ready for a full surgical facelift, you might be a candidate for Juvederm. Juvederm injections take less than 30 minutes and require minimal recovery. Temporary side effects may include tenderness, itching, bruising, swelling, bumps, or discoloration around the injection site. Most side effects are mild and should last no longer than 7 days. Juvederm might be right for you if:

  • You have deep lines around the nose, mouth, and chin
  • You want a longer lasting but ultimately temporary solution to facial aging
  • You have discussed your desired aesthetic with Dr. Brantner
  • You have given Dr. Brantner a complete list of your current medications and known allergies
  • You have several weeks available before any holiday functions to schedule your cosmetic procedure

Happy Thanksgiving, Johnson City

Happy Thanksgiving, Johnson City

thanksgivingOne look outside the window reveals a splendor we can relish every day. The folks in Johnson City are blessed to live surrounded by majestic mountains, bright and sturdy trees, and clear blue skies. But our riches aren’t just outside our door; they’re inside our hearts. The Lord has blessed us with people to love, who love us in return. We’re so grateful for the reminder each year that there are people who will gladly travel half the country to share a meal. But there are also people who need us to step across the street and invite them in for the holidays.

This Thanksgiving, we give thanks for the amazing people God has placed in our lives. We’re eager to share our blessings with the people around us, spreading his love and light through the world. Thank you for spreading his love to us, whether with a kind word when you come for an appointment or a sweet gift for the holidays. We’re so grateful to have patients who care about us as much as we care about them.

Happy Holidays from Dr. Brantner and the entire staff at Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Keep Your Skin Fresh this Winter

Keep Your Skin Fresh this Winter

A healthy skincare routine can make all the difference, whether you’re prepping your skin for a facelift or keeping it smooth and youthful after a derma peel. The long autumn has given the South a reprieve on dry, red skin, but cold weather is on its way. Protect your skin during the winter with these doctor-recommended skin care tips.

How to Protect Your Skin in Winter

  1. glowing skin - winterAvoid excessive heat. Small luxuries like a hot shower or bubble bath can leach moisture from the skin. Extreme heat can cause the surface lipid barriers in the skin to break down, drying out the skin. Take warm showers instead of hot showers. It’s also a good idea to refrain from blasting the heat your home or car. Going from the chilly outdoors to a heated interior will shock the skin, causing the same dryness as hot showers.
  2. Invest in a humidifier. You may first notice the dry air because of a sore throat, but it wreaks havoc on your skin, too. Fill a humidifier and keep it running while you’re home. This introduces moisture into the air and keeps your skin from drying out. Change the water periodically to prevent the growth of mold or mildew.
  3. Apply moisturizer. Moisturizer should already be part of your morning routine, but it’s twice as important to hydrate your skin in winter. Find a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer and apply it after your morning shower and before you go to bed. Don’t forget to moisturize your hands, elbows, and any dry patches as well.
  4. Stop smoking. Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs. Medical studies show that smoking leads to dry skin and increased signs of aging. Keep your skin healthy and glowing by kicking the nicotine habit.
  5. Lather up. Most people don’t use sunscreen in the winter, but the sun’s UV rays can do just as much damage when it’s cold outside. Use an SPF of at least 15 on your face and lips to protect your skin during the cooler months. If you don’t want an extra step in your morning routine, find a foundation and lip balm with built-in sunscreen.

A Holiday Facial Refresh

A Holiday Facial Refresh

With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the bend, many men and women are focused on creating the perfect holiday experience. Food, friends, and fun holiday decor are just the tip of the iceberg, and they won’t quit until they have a party fit to grace the likes of Southern Living. But many also have that niggling voice in the back of their head, “What about family pictures?”

Non-Surgical Procedures

youthful woman in santa hatFortunately for the camera shy, there’s an easier solution than “schedule an emergency facelift.” Non-surgical procedures require little to no recovery time, making them ideal for last minute facial rejuvenation before the holidays. The effects of Botox and derma fillers are temporary, lasting a few months to a year, so patients don’t need to worry about committing to a major procedure before they’re ready. If you’re looking to smooth wrinkles, rejuvenate the skin, and restore a youthful glow for the holidays, one of our non-surgical procedures may be right for you.

Injectible Fillers

Injectible fillers fill creases, wrinkles, and depressions in the skin. Juvederm treats folds around the nose and mouth, smoothing the skin for up to one year. Fat injection treatments use fat from the stomach to smooth wrinkles and creases. Unlike other fillers, fat injections are often permanent. Patients rarely experience complications, since the fat is harvested from the patient’s own tissue. Botox targets the facial muscles, tautening them at a subdermal level to smooth the overall appearance of the face. Botox improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines around the eyes and forehead. The results typically last three to four months, but after several treatments, many patients see more lasting results.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels rejuvenate the skin, restoring a healthy, youthful glow. Although chemical peels don’t target wrinkles the way injectible fillers do, TCA Peels and Glycolic Acid treatments may minimize the appearance of fine lines.
